Maurice Horton (Detroit, Mich.) led all Worcester State scorers with 16 points in 24 minutes. Horton got into foul trouble early in the second period.
He finished the night 5-of-10 (.500) from the field, snatched nine rebounds, and went 5-of-7 (.714) from the free throw line.
With Horton on the bench several other Lancer teammates stepped up. One of those players was Dave Douillette (Bridgewater, Mass.) who finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Also contributing for Worcester State was Pat Hamilton (Templeton, Mass.), who finished with 10 points, and nine rebounds. Hamilton was 6-of-6 from the free throw line on the night.
Worcester State shot a consistent 62 percent from the free throw line on the night.
The Lancers operated on all cylinders opening the game. “We at times executed well,” said Dave Lindberg, head coach for Worcester State College.
“When Regis cut it to one or two possessions one of our guys stepped up and made a play,” Lindberg continued.
In the first period Worcester State shot better than 54 percent from the floor.
In comparison, the Lancers held Regis to 21 percent shooting (7-of-21) from the floor. “Our defense was some part of that,” said Lindberg.
With the Lancers up by 10, a three-pointer by Regis’ Derrick Neal (Boston, Mass.) cut the Lancer lead to seven. Neal would finish with a team-high 16 points.
Opening the second period down 13, Regis College quickly got to work. Jesse Vega (Pawtucket, R.I.) hit a baseline jumper to begin a run at the Lancer lead.
“Regis played tough and with heart,” Lindberg said of the Regis attack. Vega finished his night with 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Pride outscored Worcester State in the second half. The Regis bench contributed 37 points during the game. Its bench scored 24 of Regis’ 39 second-half points.
The Lancers will host the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7 PM. Regis College will travel to nearby Newbury College on the same day for a 7 PM tip-off.
