Pride Student-Athletes Honored for Academic Excellence, Community Service
WESTON, Mass. – Culminating with the 92nd Regis College Commencement ceremony Saturday, May 7, and the Baccalaureate Mass and Awards Ceremony Friday, May 6, many Pride student-athletes received honors from various academic departments and campus offices highlighting their excellence within the Regis community.
Emily Fagundo (Dover, N.H.) was named Class of 2022 Co-Valedictorian after completing her bachelor's degree in nuclear medicine with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Earlier in April, Fagundo, graduating summa cum laude, received the Maria Leonard Book Award at the Honors Induction Ceremony.
Julia Burke (Barrington, N.H.) and Alyssa Ward (Webster, Mass.) also graduated summa cum laude, and Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.) received magna cum laude honors. In addition, Burke received the School of Arts and Sciences Baccalaureate Award for "best representing the ideals of a liberally educated person."
Burke, Fagundo, Lam, and Ward received the prestigious Crimson and Gold tassel on the basis of their outstanding service to Regis, commitment to the values of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and leadership of their class. Several other graduating student-athletes also collected the Crimson and Gold tassel: Ori Attridge (Westwood, Mass.), Freddie Beckmann (Franklin, Mass.), Kaitlyn Colby (Merrimac, Mass.), Matt Ferrara (Sandown, N.H.), Katharine Ives (Arlington, Mass.), Arpan Kakadia (Pembroke, N.H.), Erin Murphy (Bedford, N.H.), Shane Phillip (Brockton, Mass.), Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Dimitri Stewart (Paterson, N.J.), and Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.).
Miya Nishibun (Honolulu, Hawaii) received the Sloane School of Business and Communication (SBC) Leadership Award for "demonstrating exceptional scholarship and leadership as a member of the SBC and Regis community."
Kakadia was recognized at Baccalaureate with the Lynn Tripp Coleman Grace and Dedication Award for "best personifying the qualities exhibited by Coleman during her 32 years of dedicated service to Regis College." Previously at the Student Affairs Leadership Awards April 26, Kakadia received the Orientation Service Award and the Academic Excellence Award.
Also on April 26, Attridge was presented with the Leadership in Athletics Award as well as the Senior Leadership and Service Award along with Stewart. Colby was named the Student Government Association (SGA) Member of the Year.
Several sophomore and junior student-athletes were named Pillars of the Community for "embodying what it is to be a Regis student, with our heritage created by the Sisters of St. Joseph": Kristin Barrett (Plymouth, Mass.), Nick Cardenas (Hudson, N.H.), Michael Carroll (Lynn, Mass.), Sarah Ferguson (Holden, Mass.), Owen Harney (Natick, Mass.), Grace Heffernan (Winchester, Mass.), Zakaria Latifi (Holliston, Mass.), Toni Ondris (Mineola, N.Y.), and Libby Parker (Bow, N.H.).
First-year student-athlete Bryan De Souza (Everett, Mass.) was recognized by the Center for Inclusive Excellence with the Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award. In addition, he received the Rising Star Award, as did Malakai DeHuelbes (Tucson, Ariz.), Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.), and Juleen Guirand (Berkley, Mass.).
The Regis College Department of Athletics emphasizes academic excellence, commitment to service, competition on the national level, and the principles of good sportsmanship. As a Division III member of the NCAA, Regis enables student-athletes to integrate and balance their athletics experience with academic interests and other co-curricular activities.
