STANDISH, Maine — The Regis College women's lacrosse team made the trip north this evening for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup against the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine, where the home team defeated the Pride, 23-3. The loss drops Regis to 2-10 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
Serenity Ayala accounted for all three goals for the Pride, while Daniela Mazo made 12 saves in net in the effort.
The Monks saw four players record hat tricks, led by Celia Melanson, who tallied three goals and a game-high six assists. Ava Molineaux controlled the draw, securing a game-high nine.
How it Happened
The Monks struck first less than two minutes after the opening draw, but
Serenity Ayala quickly responded, forcing a turnover on the defensive end and taking it coast-to-coast to tie the game at one. Saint Joseph's answered right back with a pair of goals less than 10 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead with 8:57 remaining in the quarter. From there, three different Monks found the back of the net to extend the advantage to 6-1 after one.
Ayala once again cut into the deficit early in the second, converting on a man-up opportunity just two minutes in to make it a 6-2 game. She struck again later in the frame, capitalizing on a free-position chance during another man-up situation to bring the score to 8-3 with 8:15 remaining in the half. However, Kiley Webber and Zoey Lailer helped spark a strong finish for the Monks, each scoring twice as part of a six-goal run to close the half and give Saint Joseph's a 14-3 lead at the break.
The Monks locked in defensively over the final two quarters, holding the Pride scoreless while adding nine more goals of their own to secure a commanding 23-3 victory.
