USJ Overpowers Pride in GNAC Matchup in Weston
WESTON, Mass. — The Regis College women's lacrosse team welcomed Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe University of Saint Joseph (USJ) to Regis Stadium this afternoon, where the Blue Jays' high-powered offense proved too much for the Pride in a 19-5 loss. The defeat drops Regis to 2-9 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
Margo Gurmey led the Pride offensively with two goals, while Maddie Sainato, Serenity Ayala, and Leilany Rodriguez each added a tally. Sainato and Ayala also contributed assists. Defensively, Melinda Carbine caused a team-high three turnovers, while Daniela Mazo and Allayna Martone split time in net, recording five saves apiece.
For the Blue Jays, Anna LeGault erupted for nine goals and one assist, while Alana Picard facilitated the offense with six assists and added four goals of her own. In goal, Colleen Stringer earned the win with five saves.
How it Happened
The Blue Jays struck first, stringing together four early goals before Serenity Ayala capitalized on a free-position opportunity to put the Pride on the board and make it 4-1 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. However, the duo of Anna LeGault and Alana Picard quickly took control, combining to score or assist on five goals over the next four minutes - including a highlight back-to-the-goal finish from LeGault - to extend the lead to 9-1 at the end of one.
The second quarter was quieter by comparison, with the Blue Jays netting the first three goals of the frame. Maddie Sainato broke the run with an unassisted tally at the 5:07 mark, making it 12-2, a score that held into halftime.
Regis showed its best stretch in the third quarter. After USJ opened the frame with a goal, the Pride responded with momentum, sparked by a pair of goals from Margo Gurmey less than two minutes apart. The surge continued as Sainato found a cutting Leilany Rodriguez, who slipped a shot past the keeper to close the gap to 13-5 heading into the final period.
The Blue Jays regained full control in the fourth, scoring six unanswered goals - three coming on man-up opportunities - to seal the 19-5 victory.
