Pride Fall in Day One of GNAC Pod Play, Will Compete in Saturday Elimination Game
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Regis College softball team traveled to the University of Saint Joseph for a No. 3 vs. No. 2 South Division matchup in Great Northeast Athletic Conference postseason play. On day one of pod play, the Blue Jays defeated the Pride, 9-2. With the loss, Regis will face the loser of the Simmons vs. Emmanuel game - scheduled for 5 p.m. today - in an elimination game. Saint Joseph will take on the winner of that matchup, with both games set to be played at Simmons University on Saturday, May 2.
Lynsey Kay and Gabby Blanchard provided the lone hits for the Pride, with Kay also driving in a run. Kate Julian appeared in the circle for Regis, pitching six innings and striking out three in the effort.
The Blue Jays had three players record multiple hits, led by Lorynes Suriel, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Rachel Brewer-Karimi added a game-high three RBIs. In the circle, Analise Escarraman earned the win, tossing a complete game.
How it Happened
Francesca Licata opened the game with patience at the plate, drawing a walk to reach first, before Gabby Blanchard executed a sacrifice bunt to move her into scoring position. Licata was eventually brought home on a Lynsey Kay single to give the Pride an early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Jays responded in the home half of the inning. Jennifer Antonowicz led off with a single and later scored on a throwing error after Lorynes Suriel reached and advanced aggressively. Suriel and Rachel Brewer-Karimi each drove in runs on fielder's choices, and Kayla Phelps capped the inning with an RBI single as USJ scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Regis cut the deficit to one in the second inning when Madi Zancan worked a leadoff walk and eventually scored after Grace Motto reached on a dropped third strike and stole second, drawing a throw that allowed Zancan to come home.
Howver, USJ added three more runs in the third, as a trio of early hits sparked the inning, highlighted by a Rachel Brewer-Karimi double that plated two. In similar fashion, The Blue Jays added three more in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-1.
In the fifth, Blanchard sparked a two-out rally attempt with a single through the left side, but she was stranded as the center fielder secured the final out to end the inning. From there, both teams settled into a defensive game, with USJ collecting the lone hit over the final two innings before securing the 9-1 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Kate Julian made her 20th appearance in the circle this afternoon, the most by a single pitcher since her teammates Mya Gaspie and Mel Ree's rookie seasons.
- Madi Zancan recorded a run today, marking her third straight game crossing home plate.
