Pride Bounce Back for Game Two Win Against Mass. Maritime
WESTON, Mass. -- In their home finale, the Regis College softball team welcomed the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) to Weston for a non-conference doubleheader. The Bucs took game one in five innings, 14-0, before the Pride bounced back with a 9-4 victory in game two. The split moves Regis to 11-21 on the season.
Game One, Regis 0-14 MMA
MMA broke things open early, erupting for nine runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run over the left field fence. The Pride defense answered in the bottom half, as the third baseman recorded all three outs to keep Regis hitless and off the board.
Avery Simpson provided a spark in the third with a leadoff single and a stolen base, but the rally was cut short as the Buccaneers turned a double play to end the inning. In the fourth with the Bucs looking to add to their tally, Regis worked out of a bases-loaded jam, limiting the damage to just one run as Mel Zancan and Sydney Grund handled key plays before Mel Rees recorded a strikeout to end the threat.
The Pride looked to build momentum in the bottom of the fourth when Rees laced a two-out double to right center, just past a diving outfielder, but the rally stalled on the next at-bat.
The Bucs added to their lead in the fifth with a two-run home run off the scoreboard, extending the advantage to 14-0, a margin that held through the remainder of the game.
Game Two, Regis 9-4 MMA
The Bucs capitalized on early Pride miscues to build a 4-0 lead through the first two innings. In the bottom of the second, Kassidy Griffin recorded Regis' first hit with a ball over the head of the first baseman, but she was left stranded as the pitcher retired the next two batters.
Regis responded in the third with a momentum-shifting inning. Lynsey Kay sparked the rally with a leadoff triple, and after a walk by Mel Rees, Samantha Kelepouris drove in the Pride's first run with an RBI double to right center. Later in the frame, Mya Gaspie delivered a two-run single to cut into the deficit, bringing three runs across in the inning.
The Bucs threatened to add on in the fourth, but Gabby Blanchard shut the door in the circle, recording all three outs, including a pair of strikeouts. The Pride offense then took control in the fifth, erupting for six runs. Sydney Grund delivered a key two-run single, Lynsey Kay followed with a two-run triple, and Mel Rees added an RBI single to cap the scoring and give Regis a 9-4 advantage.
From there, both teams were held in check, and Kate Julian closed out the game by striking out the final two batters to secure the 9-4 victory.
