Pride Split GNAC Doubleheader with Lasell Behind Game One Win
WESTON, Mass. — The Regis College softball team was back on the diamond today for a GNAC doubleheader against cross-town foe Lasell University, where the Pride split with their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent, earning a 6-2 game one victory before falling 5-1 in game two. The results move Regis to 5-17 overall and 2-6 in GNAC play.
Game One, Regis 6-2 Lasell
Lasell loaded the bases early and pushed across a run on a passed ball before Lynsey Kay got the Pride out of the jam with a diving catch on a foul ball to end the threat. In the bottom of the second, the Pride capitalized on a passed ball of their own to even the score, as Megan Arruda slid home with the tying run.
An inning later, after the Lasers used an RBI double to regain a one-run edge, Francesca Licata answered with an RBI single to bring Sydney Grund around from second. Kay then delivered a double to move Licata 60 feet away, and more wild pitching allowed the Pride to take a 4-2 lead.
The Pride added to their cushion in the fifth when back-to-back RBI singles from Kay and Rees brought home Madi Zancan and Licata, extending the lead to 6-2. From there, the Pride held firm, with Zancan and Licata accounting for four of the final six outs in the closing innings to secure the Game One victory.
Game Two, Regis 1-5 Lasell
Once again, Lasell struck early, this time using an RBI single to the outfield to plate their first run of the game and grab an early lead.
Lasell added two more runs in the top of the second on a string of hits and a passed ball to extend their advantage. The Pride limited further damage in the frame, with Samantha Kelepouris handling a foul flyout at first to help strand two runners.
In the bottom half, Regis looked to respond as Madigan Lawler singled to right center and Kristen Galvin entered as a pinch runner. A fielder's choice and a throwing error moved runners into scoring position, but the Pride were unable to capitalize as a flyout and a groundout ended the inning with two left on base.
The Lasers continued their momentum in the third, breaking through with a two-RBI single to extend their lead to 6-0.
Mel Rees sparked the sixth inning with a single to right center, and after two quick outs, the Pride mounted a two-out rally. Megan Arruda, pinch running for Rees, advanced into scoring position and later moved to third on a wild pitch, while Avery Simpson drew a walk and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Madi Zancan came through with an RBI single through the left side to bring Arruda home and cut into the deficit. Zancan later stole second, but a groundout ended the inning with runners left on base.
That would be the final run of the game, as both teams were held to just one hit apiece the rest of the way. With one runner stranded in the seventh, Lasell secured the 5-1 victory and a series split.
