Pride Earn Extra-Inning Win Before Splitting Doubleheader with Curry
MILTON, Mass. — Regis College softball traveled to Milton, Massachusetts this afternoon to take on Conference of New England (CNE) foe Curry College, where Gabby Blanchard drove in the winning run in the top of the eighth to secure a 2-1 victory in game one before the Pride dropped game two, 5-2, bringing their record to 3-15 overall.
Game One, Regis 2-1 Curry
Curry struck first, capitalizing on a pair of walks before a wild pitch brought Olivia Roy home for a 1-0 lead, though Mya Gaspie limited the damage by retiring the final two batters. From there, it turned into a defensive battle, with both teams allowing just one hit per inning until the fifth.
The Pride broke through in the fifth as Kristen Galvin singled and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Michaela Edwards followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners, and after a flyout, Edwards swiped second. Gabby Blanchard then drove in Galvin with a groundout to even the score at 1-1.
The sixth mirrored the early innings, with Ciara McMenamin and Samantha Kelepouris each recording the lone hits for their teams, but both were left stranded. In the seventh, the Pride threatened to take the lead behind a Kristen Galvin double, but the Colonels' infield turned a key double play to escape the jam. Curry looked to walk it off in the home half, but the Pride defense responded with a clean three-up, three-down inning to force extras.
In the top of the eighth, with tension building, Michaela Edwards advanced to third on a groundout before Gabby Blanchard came through in the clutch with an RBI single up the middle to plate the go-ahead run. The Pride defense took over from there, working out of trouble and stranding runners on second and third, as Lynsey Kay secured the final out with a catch in left field, stealing the 2-1 victory.
Game Two, Regis 2-5 Curry
The Colonels grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the opening inning, capitalizing on an initial sacrifice bunt to move a runner into scoring position and a wild pitch.
However, the Pride responded in the second inning with back-to-back singles from Madigan Lawler and Mel Rees, driving in Megan Arruda for the team's first run. Kristen Galvin then recorded her first hit of the game - her third of the afternoon - and later came around to score herself to tie the game at 2-2.
Two innings later, the Pride's first-years looked to take the lead as Renee Arcand singled and Avery Simpson followed with a single of her own to move Arcand into scoring position. Both advanced further on a wild pitch, but were left stranded as the third baseman ended the inning with a groundout.
The Colonels answered with runners on first and second, mounting a two-out rally as Lindsay DesRoberts delivered a single up the middle to bring in the go-ahead run. Insurance runs were added an inning later, highlighted by a home run from Ana Tsonis that helped secure the eventual 5-2 Curry victory.
