ATTLEBORO, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women’s volleyball team was unanimously picked to defend its New England Collegiate Conference title, as voted by the league’s nine coaches and announced Friday by the conference office.
The Pride received all nine first-place votes to claim the top spot in the poll. The two-time defending NECC champion Pride earned 81 out of a possible 81 points, finishing ahead of second-place Newbury (65 points) and third-place Lesley (64).
The team took the No. 1 seed into the NECC Tournament last season with a perfect 8-0 conference record, and claimed a second-straight title with a five-set, come-from-behind victory over Lesley.
Reigning NECC Rookie of the Year Rachel Bartels (Edinburg, Texas) is one of 13 players returning from last year’s championship squad, while the team lost just two of its regular starters. The addition of seven incoming freshmen has the team poised for another NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Pride will open their 2016 campaign with three games at the MIT Invitational on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10.
