Cadets Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Regis Women’s Lacrosse
NORTHFIELD, Vt. — The Regis College women's lacrosse team traveled to Vermont on Saturday for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup against the Cadets of Norwich University. Norwich limited the Pride to just one second-half goal en route to a 14-5 victory, dropping Regis to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in GNAC play.
Serenity Ayala and Molly Higgins paced the Pride with two goals and four draw controls, with Ayala also adding three caused turnovers. In goal, Daniela Mazo and Kathryn Donnellan split time and recorded five saves apiece.
For Norwich, Caitlyn Fielder totaled three goals and two assists, while Sophia Albright notched a hat trick and Athena Merck added two goals and two assists. Bailey Ingala earned the win in net, making three saves.
How it Happened
Three saves from Daniela Mazo, followed by a free-position goal from Serenity Ayala, helped the Pride take an early 1-0 lead at the 7:29 mark. Mazo came up with another stop before the Cadets broke through to tie the game with five minutes remaining, then added a go-ahead goal in the final two minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
Ayala evened the score at 11:57, but Caitlyn Fielder responded with two goals less than a minute apart to push Norwich ahead 4-2 with 7:11 left in the half. Both teams traded goals down the stretch, sending the game into halftime with the Cadets holding a 6-4 advantage.
The third quarter belonged to Norwich, as five different Cadets found the back of the net to extend the lead to 11-4 entering the fourth.
Molly Higgins recorded her second goal of the game - and the lone goal of the half for the Pride - in the fourth, before the Cadets pulled away for the 14-5 victory.
