FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four on Thursday afternoon, defeating Fitchburg State 13-11 in non-conference action at Elliot Field.
With the win, the Pride improves to 5-2 on the season, while the Falcons drop their first contest of the season, falling to 5-1.
Both teams traded scores to open the contest (2-2) with sophomore Kerri Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) collecting two goals for the Pride, while sophomore Rebecca Fisher (Dracut, Mass.) and senior Carrie Long (Foxboro, Mass.) finding the back of the net for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State took a 5-4 margin with 7:33 remaining in the half as freshman Madison Alves (Braintree, Mass.) connected on a marker, but Regis netted the final two goals of the half with Anselmo and sophomore Brooke Ross (Hanover, Mass.) netting scores to give the Pride a 5-4 edge going into the break.
Following the intermission, Regis upped its lead (8-5) when Ross and newcomer Cheyanne Jones (Randolph Center, Vt.) connecting on back-to-back tallies before Fitchburg State knotted the score at 8-8 on markers by sophomore Sarah Napolitano (Peabody, Mass.), classmate Tracy Long (Georgetown, Mass.) and Alves.
The Pride responded as Ross, Anselmo and junior Emily Kosak (Milton, Mass.) registered scores to make the score 12-8. The Falcons cut the deficit to 12-11 with Napolitano notched a pair of goals, but Regis secured the win as junior Malorie Kiehl (Burlington, Mass.) buried a shot into the back of the net, resulting in the 13-11 final.
Napolitano led the way for the Falcons with three points on three goals as well as two ground balls, while T. Long added three goals, three ground balls, one caused turnover and two draw controls. C. Long was also solid for the Green and Gold, finishing with two goals, five ground balls, five draw controls and five caused turnovers.
For the Pride, Anselmo tallied a game-best six points on five goals and one assist to go along with one ground ball, one draw control and one caused turnover, while Ross chipped in with four goals, a ground ball.
In goal, junior Marguerite Belcher (Quincy, Mass.) stopped ten shots in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while freshman Brittany McPherson (Lynn, Mass.) made 13 saves for the Pride, en-route to her first collegiate victory.
Up next, the Falcons will travel to Westfield State University on Saturday to take on the Owls for a MASCAC matchup starting at 12:00 p.m. The Pride will visit Lasell College on Tuesday for a GNAC tilt at 4:00 p.m.
