Women's Basketball Wraps Up Florida Trip with Setback Against Grove City
DAYTONA, Fla. — The Regis College women's basketball team returned to the floor on day two of the Daytona Beach Shootout but fell to Grove City, as the Wolverines handed the Pride a 70-43 setback and dropped Regis to 3-8 heading into the New Year.
Madi Zancan led the Pride with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Jillian Perry added eight points and five rebounds in the effort.
Grove City was paced by Reese Hasley, who scored 12 points, while Meredith Sherrerd chipped in 10 points and four rebounds in the victory.
How it Happened
Grove City jumped out to a 13–0 lead before a jumper from Kristina Asmani stopped the bleeding and gave the Pride their first basket at the 6:16 mark of the opening quarter. The Wolverines led by as many as 15 before four points apiece from Madi Zancan and Kailyn Smith helped cut the deficit to 22-13 at the end of the first.
Almost four minutes into the stanza, the Wolverines built their largest lead of the half at 20 before an 8-2 run helped the Pride cut the deficit to 35-21 with just over three minutes remaining. Over the final 2:15 of the half, Regis held Grove City scoreless and added five points of their own to make it a 37-26 game heading into the break.
The Wolverines used the third frame to create separation, holding the Pride to just seven points - five of which came at the free-throw line from Madi Zancan. Grove City added 15 points of its own to take a 52-33 advantage heading into the final quarter.
A three-pointer gave the Wolverines their largest lead of the game at 64–35 with 5:41 remaining before a jumper from Fatma Fatah halted the momentum. Perry followed with back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to 21 with 3:54 to play, but that would be as close as the Pride would get as Grove City came away with the 70-43 victory.
