Beacons Handle Pride, 82-69
BOSTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's basketball traveled to Boston this evening to take on UMass–Boston, where the Beacons claimed an 82-69 victory, dropping the Pride's record to 1-4 on the young season.
Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) led the Pride with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) and Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Jillian Perry (Melrose, Mass.) contributed 10 points and a team-high four steals.
For the Beacons, Sabanna Berrios exploded for a game-high 28 points to go with seven rebounds, while Sibayla Jensen filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and four steals in the victory.
How it Happened
A slow start ensued with neither team finding the bottom of the basket until two minutes into the action, when a pair of Beacon buckets opened the scoring. A Marinelli triple stopped their short run at the 7:37 mark. Shortly after, back-to-back deep balls from the Pride put them ahead, 10-8, before a Striggles easy two pushed the lead to four at the halfway point. A Zancan layup put Regis up five with just over two minutes remaining, before the Beacons closed out the frame with 12 unanswered, sparked by back-to-back Haggett threes, to go up 24-17 after one.
A Beacons three at the 6:51 mark gave them their first double-digit advantage, 29-19. However, the Pride would not go away, as a Kristini Assmani three and a pair of perfect trips to the stripe from Perry brought the Pride back within three, 29-26, less than a minute later. However, the Beacons then locked in defensively and did not allow another field goal in the final five minutes, heading into the break ahead 40-30.
Marinelli came out of the break with an early three to bring the Pride back within single digits. However, the Beacons regained their double-digit edge at the midway point with another Haggett three, going up 48–37. Zoey Swanson (North Easton, Mass.) provided a quick answer on the other end, but the Beacons held strong, maintaining a double-digit lead for the majority of the remainder of the quarter, to go into the final 10 minutes ahead, 59-46.
A Striggles three early in the quarter brought the Pride back to a 10-point game, but the Beacons always had the answer. UMass–Boston would lead by as many as 18 before a Perry triple at the 4:03 mark stopped their run. However, the deficit proved too much, as the Beacons went on to win 82-69.
