Salem State Defeats Regis in Midday Matchup
SALEM, Mass. — The Regis College women's basketball team traveled to Salem State University this afternoon, where a standout performance from Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) was not enough to overcome the Vikings, who defeated the Pride 71-58. The loss drops Regis to 1-3 on the young season.
Zancan was a bright spot for the Pride, delivering a dominant 32-point (9-11 FG), 14-rebound double-double, to go along with five steals. Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) added six points, while Kailyn Smith (Winchester, Mass.) anchored the defensive effort with five steals.
Salem State saw four players reach double figures, led by Yamilette Guerrero, who came close to a triple-double with 13 points, eight assists, and seven steals. Ernidia Goncalves also turned in a strong performance, recording a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double in the Vikings' victory.
How it Happened
A deep three from Jillian Perry (Melrose, Mass.) put the Pride ahead 5-2 early, but the Vikings quickly responded and claimed control. Salem State held the lead until the 4:29 mark, when a Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) layup knotted the score at 11. However, Salem State's Sunali Carter scored six points to close out the quarter, giving the Vikings an 18-13 advantage after one.
Zancan kept the Pride within reach throughout the second frame, scoring eight of Regis' 10 points in the quarter, allowing the Pride to head into halftime trailing just 27-23.
A Zancan layup kept the Pride within four just before the midway point of the third, but a 10-2 Salem State run stretched the deficit. A Marinelli triple halted the Vikings' momentum and cut the gap to 44-36 with under two minutes remaining in the quarter, but Salem State carried a 50-38 lead into the final frame.
Perfect trips to the free-throw line by Zancan and Zoey Swanson (North Easton, Mass.) brought the Pride back within 11 early in the fourth. The Vikings answered with a decisive 15-2 run, pushing the margin to 68–44 with just over two minutes remaining. Zancan poured in 12 points in the closing minutes, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Vikings secured the 71–58 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Madi Zancan posted a career-high 32 points in this afternoon's effort, shooting an impressive 9-for-11 from the field and 14-for-18 from the free-throw line. Her nine offensive rebounds were nearly enough to give her a double-double on offensive boards alone.
- First-year Zoey Swanson recorded career highs in both points (4) and rebounds (7) in the effort.
