WESTON, Mass. – Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) led all scorers with a career-high 20 points, and Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) earned her first collegiate double-double in a non-conference collegiate women's basketball victory for Regis College against Wentworth at Higgins Court, 69-49.
Searcy shot 10-of-12 from the free throw line, plus she also made her presence felt defensively with five steals. Gonzalez added 13 points and 15 rebounds with a pair of blocks in the contest.
The Pride and Leopards traded baskets early in the contest. After a Gonzalez layup tied the game at 5-5, the Leopards scored the next four points off an Emily Magasic jumper and a pair of free throws from Isabella Perez. Regis used a pair of shots from the line by Searcy, and Gonzalez scored off a layup to tie the game at 9-9 with 5:59 remaining in the first quarter.
Wentworth again went up by four, but a three-pointer from Shannon Kelley (Quincy, Mass.) and a Searcy layup gave the Pride their first lead of the contest, 14-13. The first quarter ended with Regis leading 16-15.
With the Pride trailing by one with 7:10 left in the second quarter, Searcy sparked an eight-point run with a layup. Searcy scored six of her 13 first half points during the run to give Regis the lead, 27-20. Regis led at the half, 29-24.
Regis used the first five minutes of the third to extend their lead. After a layup by Marissa Prall (Hopkinton, Mass.) put the Pride up by 10, Searcy extended the lead to 12 by hitting a pair of free throws. The Pride extended their lead to as many as 18 points, closing the third quarter leading the Leopards, 52-37.
The Pride were able to maintain their lead throughout the fourth quarter trading baskets with Wentworth to earn the victory.
Regis held the advantage off the bench outscoring the Leopards 21-18, and the Pride also held an advantage in the paint outscoring their opponents 40-26.
Wentworth (4-3) will play against Nichols on Wednesday, Dec. 4. They will then host Roger Williams on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Regis (5-4) returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. against Framingham State. The Pride then travel to Quincy, Mass. to take on Eastern Nazarene on Saturday, Dec. 7, their final game before the New Year.
