2016-17 Regis (Mass.) Women's Basketball Schedule
WESTON, Mass. - Head Coach Angela Santa Fe unveiled the Regis (Mass.) women’s basketball schedule on Wednesday morning. The 25-game slate features seven non-conference matchups, including four opponents who reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
“We have our work cut out for us this season between stronger conference play, along with a highly competitive non-conference schedule,” said Santa Fe, who enters her fourth season at the helm of the Pride. “With having multiple opponents that made appearances in the NCAA tournament last season, as well as an out of region tournament in December, we will be tested physically and mentally. I am looking forward to taking on these challenges with this team.”
The Pride will open its 2016-17 season against one of these teams, Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of New England Tournament. The Wildcats, a future conference foe when Regis joins the Great Northeast Athletic Conference next season, earned an at-large bid into the tournament after they were upset by Emmanuel in the semifinals of the GNAC tournament. The team fell to Rochester (N.Y.) 79-49 in the first round to finish its season 24-4.
The team will travel to Las Vegas the week before Christmas to take part in the Las Vegas Hoopla Tournament, taking on opponents Cal Lutheran and another NCAA team from last season, Montclair State. The Red Hawks have become a familiar foe for the Pride over the last few seasons, as the two teams met in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2013, 2014 and 2015, with Montclair State winning all three. The Red Hawks advanced to the second round a year ago after defeating SUNY Polytechnic Institute in the opening round, before falling to Albright.
The Pride turns the calendar to 2017 with a tough test against Bowdoin on Jan. 3, a team that reached the Sweet Sixteen last spring. Like Johnson & Wales, Bowdoin’s season came to an end at the hands of Rochester. The team finished the season 22-7 in 2015-16.
Two days later, the Pride will travel to Standish, Maine to take on the defending GNAC champion Saint Joseph’s College Monks. The Monks won a nail-biter over Emmanuel to claim the GNAC title 66-62 last season, before falling to Christopher Newport in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Pride defeated Saint Joseph’s 65-58 last season.
Regis opens its 2016-17 conference slate on Nov. 29 when it travels to Mitchell College to take on the Mariners. The showdown is the first of 18 regular season matchups against New England Collegiate Conference opponents this upcoming season. In five seasons since entering the NECC, Regis has never lost a regular season conference game.
The first of two rematches of last season’s NECC Championship takes place on Jan. 7 when the Pride hosts Newbury College. Tip-off for the rematch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
