No. 3 Softball To Host No. 6 Elms Tuesday In NECC Opening Round
After finishing the conference season at 13-5, the Regis (Mass.) softball team earned the No. 3 seed in this week?s New England Collegiate Conference tournament and will host No. 6 Elms Tuesday, 4:00 p.m. at Regis Field.
WESTON, Mass. - After finishing the conference season at 13-5, the Regis (Mass.) softball team earned the No. 3 seed in this week's New England Collegiate Conference tournament and will host No. 6 Elms Tuesday, 4:00 p.m. at Regis Field.
The opening round matchup pits a pair of teams who split their two regular season games in a doubleheader played at Regis this past week. Elms scored the lone run in the seventh inning to win the opener before the Pride responded with a 3-2 win on the back end.
Regis earns the third seed as a result of strong pitching throughout the season; the Pride completed the season allowing an average of 1.99 earned runs per game, while tallying 5.87 strikeouts per seven innings. Freshman pitcher Madi McLellan has taken the league by storm. She struck out a league-best 96 batters during conference play and was second in the league with a 1.35 earned run average.
Elms, who finished the league season at 10-8, are armed with sophomore Erin O'Donnell who has been the team's offensive threat having finished the conference season with a .431 batting average.
The winners of the four opening round games will advance to the final round set up in a double elimination format beginning Friday, May 5. The highest seed advancing will serve as the host for all final round games which will be played on Friday and Saturday with a Sunday title game if necessary.
