WESTON, Mass. - Take in a Regis (Mass.) men’s tennis match this season and you’ll likely see Chris Harrow squaring off on both the No. 1 singles and doubles courts, but how the rest of the lineup will shake out is anyone’s guess.
Harrow repeated as league player of the year last spring and led the team with 15 singles, tied for fourth all-time in program history. Heading into his senior year, a third player of the year selections is certainly within reach.
“Chris works very hard at his game and made a giant leap from his sophomore to junior year,” said head coach John Ciarleglio. “He’s been playing a lot this summer and I expect great things out of him. Still in question is who his doubles partner will be.”
Like the women’s team, the men have a split schedule, but with the championship season not until the spring Ciarleglio has the fall to resolve any question marks surrounding his lineup and doubles pairings. Sophomore Nolan Bebarta competed with Harrow the most of any returnee but his 10-1 record on the No. 2 court with Luke Horton can’t be understated. Added Ciarleglio, “Nolan played really well last season and he’s grown a lot over the course of his freshman year.”
Newcomers to the team are New Yorkers Matt DaRosso and Johnny Pallotta as well Tim Miller, Owen Pelissier and Mitchell Weiner. “It’s hard to say which will prevail and move to the top,” said Ciarleglio of the impact of his freshman crop. “None come in as being near the top or bottom of the lineup and will have to prove themselves with their play this fall.”
Cam Charbonneau also figures to be in the mix after having an excellent 2016-17 where he went undefeated in four No. 3 singles matches and 5-1 on the No. 4 singles court. His 13 singles wins was second only Harrow.
The Pride opens the season hosting Eastern Nazarene Friday, Sept. 8. The match is the first of eight fall contests, seven played at the friendly confines of the Regis Tennis Center which includes Division II Saint Anselm. The Pride will again head to Orlando for spring break before treating fans to an early April match against Division I Holy Cross out of the Patriot League.
