REGIS BESTS SALVE REGINA FOR FIRST WIN OF 2014
The Regis College men's tennis team opened the 2014 season with an 8-1 victory over Salve Regina University on Sunday afternoon in Weston, Mass. The Pride move to 1-0 on the year, while the Seahawks drop to 0-1.
WESTON, Mass. - The Regis College men's tennis team opened the 2014 season with an 8-1 victory over Salve Regina University on Sunday afternoon in Weston, Mass. The Pride move to 1-0 on the year, while the Seahawks drop to 0-1.
Regis swept doubles play to open the match as Michael Beluch (Lynn, Mass.) and Matt Quattrociocchi (Germantown, Md.) grabbed an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Jack Lawlor (York, Maine) and Kevin Brock. Chris Harrow (North Reading, Mass.) and Jeremy Morgenbesser (Bayport, N.Y.) added an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while Jarid Polley (Reading, Mass.) and Austin Nace (Sarasota, Fla.) posted an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Matt Gingras (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Will Masse (Wyoming, R.I.).
In singles play, Beluch opened up the 2014 season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lawlor at No. 1 singles. Rookie Chris Harrow recorded his first career singles win over Monaf Awwa (Old Lyme, Conn.) in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at the second singles spot.
2014 NECC Rookie of the Year Morgenbesser picked up where he left off, battling for a 7-5 win in the opening set and following it up with a 6-1 win over Matthew Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.) at No. 3 singles. Quattrociocchi and Scott Barrett (Burlington, Mass.) posted their first singles wins of the year at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Salve Regina's lone point of the day came at the No. 6 singles spot as Will Masse won the opening set against Nick Hildreth (Harvard, Mass.) in a tiebreak. Masse took the first set, 6-3, but Hildreth rebounded for a 6-1 win in the second set. Masse outlasted Hildreth in the tie-breaker, winning 10-8 for the Seahawks.
The Pride are back in action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Franklin Pierce University for a 3:30 p.m. match. Salve Regina looks for their first win of the year next Sunday when they travel to Clark University for a 1:00 p.m. match.
