WESTON, Mass. – Regis College improved to 6-1 in the NECC and 9-6 overall with a 7-2 victory over Newbury College in a New England Collegiate Conference men's tennis matchup on Tuesday night in Weston, Mass. Newbury falls to 0-7 and 0-6 in the NECC with the setback.
Regis set the tone of the match, sweeping first doubles. First year Michael Beluch (Lynn, Mass.) and sophomore Andy White (Bozeman, Mont.) held off Newbury sophomore Gerard Font-Raventos (Barcelona, Spain) and junior Robert Leng (Saugus, Mass.) in first doubles with a score of 8-0.
Nighthawk sophomore John Morgan (Cumberland, R.I.) and first year Wayne Gethers (Cambridge, Mass.) battled sophomores Sophorn Nop (Lowell, Mass.) and Jeffrie Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) tight in second doubles; however the Pride sophomore tandem was able to escape with the 8-3 victory.
Following juniors Mouhamed Diallo (Boston, Mass.) and Matt Smolko's (Pelham, N.H.) 8-1 third doubles victory, the Nighthawks were resilient and refused to go down quietly in the singles portion of the competition. Playing in his second match of the season senior Ben Weiner (Barrington, R.I.) picked up his first victory of the season defeating Parrish in third singles, 6-2, 6-3.
At fifth singles, Morgan was able to earn his first singles win of the season, edging out Diallo, 6-2, 6-4. The Cumberland, R.I. native was able to take the early 1-0 match advantage taking the first set, 6-2 but Diallo battled back and grabbed the early, 3-2 lead at the start of the second set. But Morgan was not done yet. Despite being down by one, Morgan responded and took the match, 6-4.
Regis returns to action tomorrow afternoon when the Pride hosts Mitchell College in a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
