CRANSTON, R.I. – The Regis College men's soccer team could not overcome the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales on the road in the quarterfinal round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Friday afternoon, losing, 1-0.
In the match, goalkeeper Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calif.) saved all but one of the shots he faced, making nine saves on the day, five in the first half. Johnson & Wales goalie Nicholas Mancini picked up three saves on the day.
The Pride had their first true opportunity in the 28th minute of play when Cesar Da Silva (Boca Raton, Fla.) fired a shot from just outside the box that went above the goalkeeper's hands, hit off the crossbar, and ricocheted out of the box. A few minutes later, the Pride defense would shut down a scoring opportunity for the Wildcats off a free kick.
The Wildcats' Nick Gutekunst would be the only player to score in the match off a shot that made its way past the goalkeeper and a group of defenders into the lower left corner of the net.
Johnson & Wales, the second seed in the tournament, will advance to the semifinals and face the winner of the quarterfinal between Norwich University and the University of Saint Joseph.
The Pride end their season with an overall record of 8-6-2.
