ATTLEBORO, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) men's lacrosse team received all but one first-place vote in being picked to defend its 2016 New England Collegiate Conference title, as voted by the league's five head coaches.
The Pride were picked to finish third last season under first-year head coach Randy Fraser but ran the league table en route to the program's first regular season and tournament title. Regis claimed 24 votes with Becker, last season's NECC runner-up picking up the other first-place vote and 19 total.
The team returns just one all-conference performer from last season, NECC Player of the Year goalie D.J. Barrile. Barrile closed the season as the NCAA Division III leader in save percentage (.672) and was selected the NECC Tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Despite the losses of all-NECC picks Nicky Rodrigo, Jack O'Brien and Andrew O'Reilly, the Pride is constructed of an eight-man senior class that will be sure to provide veteran leadership during the course of its title defense.
Regis opens the season on Saturday, Feb. 25 hosting SUNY Poly. Faceoff at Regis Stadium is set for 11:30 p.m.
