MILTON, Mass. — Regis College men's basketball opened day one of the Autism Acceptance Classic, hosted by Curry College, with a 68–51 loss to Salve Regina University, dropping the Pride to 1–1 on the season.
Jamir Harvey paced Regis with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Gehrig Brynda added 14 points, knocking down four of his eight attempts from beyond the arc.
Salve Regina featured three players in double figures, led by Sean Seymour's 16 points and four assists. William Mensah contributed 11 points and six rebounds in the Seahawks' victory.
How it Happened
Both sides started slowly on offense, with the Pride scoring just two points in the opening ten minutes compared to the Seahawks' 13. At the 8:42 mark, a layup by Harvey followed by a dunk gave the Pride a spark, narrowing the gap to 15-6. However, Salve Regina regained control and held Regis to just 26.9% shooting in the first half, stretching the lead to as many as 21 points with 37 seconds remaining before heading into the break up 35-16.
Brynda tried to keep the Pride within striking distance, scoring eight points for the Pride in the early minutes of the second to cut the deficit to 44-29 with just over 15 minutes left. Regis continued to battle, as Harvey converted a perfect trip to the free-throw line and Aamyr Sullivan (Middletown, R.I.) added an easy finish to bring the margin down to 12 (59-47). The push forced Salve Regina to regroup, and the Seahawks responded with a decisive 9-1 run. A late layup by Raymond Johnson stopped the surge with under two minutes remaining, but it wasn't enough as the Seahawks closed out the 68-51 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Jamir Harvey had opened his senior season with back-to-back games in double figures.
- Jahkai Veal (Farmington, Conn.) recorded his first point in the crimson and gold in tonight's effort.
- The Seahawks used the free-throw line to create separation tonight, converting 12 of 17 attempts, while the Pride went 3-5.
