WESTON, Mass. – Playing in blustery conditions, Regis College attempted to hold off Mount Holyoke College, but the Lyons provided too much offensive firepower, defeating the Pride, 6-2, Thursday afternoon in a non-conference collegiate field hockey match at Regis Stadium.
Mount Holyoke struck in the first minute, as Laurissa Montigny found Mirei Golding-Powers in scoring position, and Golding-Powers converted for her seventh goal of the season. The Lyons continued to pressure the Pride defense, with four shots and two penalty corners over the next six minutes, but none of the shots were on target.
The Pride tied the match late in the first period as Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, Mass.) picked up her 12th goal of the season, now just one goal away from the Regis single-season record. The Lyons had a chance to retake the lead with 1:22 remaining in the period, but Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) was able to turn away a shot by Leah Pendl-Robinson.
The Lyons took the lead for good early in the second period on a goal by Montigny. Less than a minute later, after a shot by Margaret Robb hit the post, Kass Lawrence corralled the rebound and took her own shot, which eluded everyone before crossing the goal line. Golding-Powers earned her second goal of the game midway through the period, giving Mount Holyoke a 4-1 lead heading into halftime.
After a scoreless third period thanks in part to five saves by Winkin, Regis gained possession early in the fourth period and drew a series of four penalty corners. Finally, the Pride were granted a penalty stroke opportunity, and Joslyn O'Brien (Petersham, Mass.) was successful for her third goal of the season, closing the Lyon lead to 4-2.
Mount Holyoke quickly put the game away, as Montigny scored her second goal of the match just 28 seconds after O'Brien's tally. Less than a minute later, Golding-Powers sent a pass across the field from the right side to the left side, where Kylie Brooks gathered the ball and shot it into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Lyons outshot the Pride 29-7, led by Robb and Golding-Powers with eight shots apiece. Blaha led Regis with three total shots as the Pride did draw eight penalty corners, but Mount Holyoke was granted 14 penalty corners during the afternoon.
Winkin finished with a season-high 13 saves for the Pride. Morgan Turner started in net for the Lyons and made two saves in over 48 minutes of action before being replaced by Maddie Miller, who was credited with one save.
