WINTHROP, Mass. - Entering its first season competing in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team has been selected to finish fourth in the conference's 2017 Preseason Poll, which was released by the GNAC on Monday.
The top spot went to the two-time defending champions from Saint Joseph's (Me.). The Monks picked up nine of a possible 13 first place votes to lead the way with a total of 162 points. Emmanuel was selected second with 153 points and two first place votes, while the final two first place votes went to Johnson & Wales, which finished just behind the Saints with 152 points.
The Pride was the highest seed to not pick up a first place vote in the fourth position, finishing with 113 points. Regis finished just ahead of Suffolk, which claimed fifth with 111 points.
It is the first time since the 2010-11 season that the Pride, which won its fifth consecutive New England Collegiate Conference championship last February, is ranked outside the top spot in their respective preseason poll. The Pride was selected as preseason favorites in each of its six seasons in the NECC.
Regis opens its season on Friday night by taking on MIT at Tufts University at 5:30 p.m. The Pride will open its home schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 29 when it hosts Keene State at Higgins Court at 6:00 p.m. and plays its first ever GNAC game on Saturday Dec. 2 at Albertus Magnus.
